The outer story is about a kid and his dad who doesn’t understand play. An inner story has tokens that elaborate on this, a story that is mostly flashiness. The animation is based on Lego and I am sure there is a large franchise in the works.
An inner, inner story is about an intrepid girl who doggedly searches for the legendary special piece. She is a master builder and it is she that repeatedly saves the day and pulls the hapless hero through the story. This character is sadly drawn. She has identity issues, picks her men unwisely and is disappointed in not being the chosen one.
At the end of the movie, when all else is reconciled, her agency is removed as she becomes ‘the girlfriend.’ That agency is insultingly replaced by the boy’s little sister. I think we need to see her again, and see her master her situation.
