Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Rebecca Again

Tom does his badass stuff. I don’t know how far he can take this, and how long we will care. But there is something going on here in the MI universe. Now in this film we have history. The universe matters. A bad guy from the past. An agency/director (actually two) who doubted and became believers. A wife! Who we might have known about. I forget.

But it is clear what they are trying to do. Ethan is a man with a history. We’re not just getting episodes where more or less the same things happen, the same heroes, villains and jokes. There’s long form development across the movies, building a universe.

We don’t care whether Tom breaks an ankle or a rib. But we are meant to care about Ethan’s soul.

Will it work? It is all about the women, that’s how this has been set up; woman gazing, supporting, ambiguously engaged.

I think it’s clever, and never been done before, has it?
