I really dislike David Koepp’s work, with one exception. He seems to absorb the world of the filmmaker, and amplifies his (always his) vision. In this case, we have a few set pieces that deliver no unexpected situation whatever — just sequences of narrow escapes until some don’t avoid disaster.
This time hispanic girls, but the same tech bro. I’m perfectly fine with the message that technology is largely borrowed or even stolen and huge fortunes are made at the whim of the market. I’m quite happy to see at least one of those guys ripped to pieces. But the cost of sitting through the whole film was too much.
Surprisingly, Scarlett was pretty much a non-entity in this project.
I saw it on a big screen, thinking that I would get some visual power from the experience. It seemed muddy to me, and I think folks next door at F1 and Monster Training were having a better visual experience.
Oddly, I noticed the monsters were patterned not on actual creatures, but on some comic book tropes of what is supposed to be scary. What worked for me in the earlier films was the knowledge that at least the shapes we saw were actual creatures inherited from some past. The wonder and fright followed. Looking at these, they are comparatively muppets.
Oh, the one thing Koepp did that was important? ’Snake Eyes’, except the end of course, dictated by the studio.
