These films are a concept salad, with things borrowed from trusted buckets. The proposition seems to be that if you have enough of these you can cobble a blockbuster audience — in the case of Christmas movies, a recurring audience.
What they expect is that we will find something in the mix to like, and you won’t be too bothered by the other nonsense. I was bothered by the laziness of almost everything, so I’ll not recommend this to you.
But I will note the one thing I liked, the sleigh. I liked everything about it: the retro spaceship design, the notion of a replaceable module of miniaturised gifts. The runway, the deer lighting. I liked the way they designed the operation and used it to ‘explain’ the deliveries. Clearly, they divided this movie up among designers and FX shops. Whichever among them did a good enough job for me to find something that did not bother me.
I cannot quite explain why Johnson is valued at the extreme that he is. He is suited for Jumanji and the Disney ride movie, but here he is the uncle you need to invite to dinner just because.
This appeared before the Trump Retribution, and it should not go unremarked that lists of bad behavers is prominent enough to anchor something designed for every urge.
