Everyone is a suspect.
Filmmaker(s): Stephen Shimek

A reclusive billionaire invites six seemingly random strangers to his island estate in the south of England. Aspiring detective Miranda Green finds the mysterious invitation too alluring to pass up. When another guest turns up dead, Miranda must get to the bottom of the malicious plot behind the gathering.

Invitation to a Murder (2023)

Hidden Fathers, Lost Mothers

This is a lesson in what not to do if you decide to milk instead of going a genre. The genre of course is defined by Agatha Christie. In its pure form is has a remote location, a murder, and then others, and a detective that sits in between the viewer and the world of the story. This detective ’sees’ things and explains to us while the suspects watch. An important element is that nearly every suspect is guilty of something, just not the murder.

The weakness is in the unlikelihood that all these minor deceptions add. I study these things because coordinated happenstance is a driving element of something that interests me.

The ‘Hallmark’ variety has elements of a Christie plot, but focuses on a woman detective drawn from their target demographic. Here it is an actress who I discover was a public mess and now reborn, not as a thin, fast, stupid model, but a middle-aged florist who haunts the library.

It has a remote island with a mysterious getaway. But the writers only had the space to have one of them bring a secret and its necessary actions. When the secrets are revealed, there’s more Scooby-Doo than Christie here.
