Films made for kids, by kids.
It seems safe enough: use a best seller from the YA bookshelf. Have some reasonable action scenes. Hire a known kid actor. Insert a romance and a twist, and take the money.
It should not be fair for me to comment on this as if I were the target demographic. But I can remark on how clever the assumption is that kids will understand the film history well enough to accept that aliens can take over human bodies.
This depends on that film history, even though none of the audience will have been alive when the original films were made. That includes the tropes of untrusted family members, internal conflict of humanness, and victorious teen romance.
The experience is a waste, but this insight of film on film is embedded in our youth, and that is remarkable.
