Shallow Well
This is not just reminiscent of ‘Aladdin’, it is a copy of hundreds of films that have come before, with no notable deviation or identity. It still has value. It is presented exceptionally well.
I’ve become more accepting of repetition as I grow older, and I think many audiences like it as well. So this will be a comment on copying rather than working within a genre.
I see this in political narrative. The less deviation, the better. In the current situation in the US, a decision has been made to copy formerly despised dictators. The benefit of effectiveness is considered worth the cost of being associated some of the vilest monsters we know.
I’ve been exposed to some children’s shows (for say 7-8 year olds) that are simple copies of the previous episode. Same jokes, same characters, essentially the same situations. It seems to sooth, to reinforce an elaboration of life — which after all is a series of samenesses that in most cases keep us safe.
I like to be challenged, and ideally changed. But that is a different relationship than most folks have. I embrace that as well, in part because this sameness defines differences.
