How I Met Your Spy Mother
Gosh, another film I cannot recommend from the trailer on. This script comes from a vending machine with the selections: ‘romantic comedy’, sexy girl superhero/Bond, two and a half big action sequences, with the governance in that order.
It almost seems that there were three teams of writers/directors involved, each looking to their bin of tropes. I recently saw another film ‘The Fall Guy’ with the similar but slightly different trifurcation. Streaming platforms must make these things safe to make.
My experience with Chris Evens has not been rewarding, but Ana de Armas can be extraordinary, and be so without cartoon seduction. In fact, she almost cinematically defines that deeper attraction, that yearning from your soul. So I think this is worse than zero because it waters down her cross-film cinematic power. ‘Wolfs’ did this as well, squandering emotions and urges we’ve accepted from their prior art.
The last action scene, quite apart from all the above, is a lesson in silliness. Not amusing or thrilling silliness, just silly.
