Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

Maxxed out

I understand how this was made. ‘Fury Road’ was a mess, a rescued, done-over-several-times mess that few people involved thought would work, but it did. So the studios were eager to make another, and Miller already had the prequel sketched because he needed a backstory for ‘Fury’.

It probably was a useful backstory for the original movie. I understand that this production was as orderly and predicable as the predecessor was not. They had decent actors, as before. There are some impressive action sequences and more desolate desert. But little of it worked for me. There’s too much story, too much soap opera, too much cruelty.

More basically, the politics was too orderly, too much like current affairs, where the prior movies — all of them — were more fantasy than ordinary human drama. It increased the appeal for me that there were mysteries and ambiguities in ‘Fury’, that it had almost no real story and reinvented or even invented the modern chase movie.

This movie holds the same place in my mind that the Star Wars prequels do, ruining both.

I think if I watch it again I will just do the road and truck sequences.
