Hit Man (2023)

Explicitness Kills

Something I have learned about effective introspection in film is that the least acknowledged is the most effective. Two extremes may be “Under the Skin” or “Pillow Book” or even “In the Mood for Love” at one successful end and this at the other. The first transgression is that the two lovers come to know and accept the cinematic thrill of inhabiting a genre. Everyone around knows the dual identity and celebrate it.

The second transgression is that our hero literally lectures on the supposed psychological dynamics involved in a classroom.

“Baby Driver” plays it straight and works. This punches holes in its own ballon, I suppose because it wants to advertise it is clever and make plain the supposedly clever dynamic.

You might call this the Tarantino effect where much of what he does would work better if we wasn’t celebrating himself so much.
