Captain America: Civil War (2016)
United we stand. Divided we fall.
Filmmaker(s): Joe Russo, Anthony Russo

Following the events of Age of Ultron, the collective governments of the world pass an act designed to regulate all superhuman activity. This polarizes opinion amongst the Avengers, causing two factions to side with Iron Man or Captain America, which causes an epic battle between former allies.

Dialog matters

This is the second of the Russo Marvel movies. I find it less tedious than other Marvel movies for two reasons: the dialog is superb, at the level of real films. This spills over to a reasonably successful mix of humour in the fights, the second appealing quality. The two central figures in serious combat doesn’t work for me, simply because though Evan’s character is strong, he is not a world class actor— and Downey is.

But along the way, three parent revenge stories? Really? Yet another secret lair of an experimental super-soldier project by evil scientists? Yet another bunch of feckless diplomats?

Two love stories with partners on opposite sides? It almost seems Lego-like in its construction.

But almost every scene with Tony speaking and not fighting is terrific. One suspects that these are largely improvised. The first scene with Spiderman is great, and before with Aunt May.

There are many fight scenes, many. Probably the most expensive was the airport fight. I could see that they really worked hard to get some variety in this. But it all seemed hokey, as if it is what it actually is, not people actually fighting, but people putting themselves in interesting violent but harmless situations for us.

There isn’t that much distance between this and the Three Stooges.
