Your Local Manager

I came to this with kids, not knowing anything. The story is ordinary, with features borrowed from a familiar bucket.

But it had energy, massive energy in more than one dimension. The title character, the city backgrounds, and most particularly the camera — all these are a half step beyond the norm. So it doesn’t matter if every story element and every fragment of dialog is trite, the energy is what matters.

There’s a particular shot I noticed. Our two heroes are moving through the city. It is a procedural shot that simply transitions. Nothing is happening. The dialog is the same witty but unimportant stuff as always. But instead of the camera staying with the vehicle, it runs ahead as if it is eager to get in front on a motorbike.

I don’t know who to credit. Nothing from Blue Sky matches this. I know it is based on a ‘graphic novel’ and assume the device of a punk girl is from there.
