Camera as Soul
First of all, I am a sucker for artisanal stop motion. I’ve even elevated a few to my must see list of ‘fours’. This clearly was something from a deep emotional drive, in the only solitary film medium.
The art here is remarkable because the doll is rendered in near real time to match the moving forest shadows, or alternately slowed down to match the blooming of flowers or insects. There are no other sets as in usual projects; the forest is the background.
But this is not a shinto meditation, and is quite western in perspective — though it is self-critical. The munchkin has as a main occupation, the slicing of ‘western dandelions’ so as to protect the endangered Japanese variety.
The craft and dime store whimsey is compelling. I recommend this.
